That way, all the VC has to do is look back on a month\u2019s worth of company presentations, sort them by metrics, and call in the top three teams for a meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"877c\" class=\"ll lm ny ln b lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi fk bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cIf you\u2019re confident your business idea is doing so well that you\u2019re definitely going to score in the top three on those metrics, maybe that\u2019s all you need to do. But for the rest, it\u2019s important to do more than simply make it easier for a VC to rank you in a spreadsheet. You have to reach in down their optic nerves, right through their rational, calculating forebrain, and grab them by the emotional hindbrain, with both hands, and pull\u2026 hard!\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"215e\" class=\"ll lm ny ln b lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi fk bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cA story sticks in the memory of your audience when it engages our senses and our own memories\u2026 so great stories always include sentences that begin with, \u201cTake a moment to remember how you felt when you first\u2026\u201d and \u201cDo you love\/hate the sound\/feel\/taste of\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7cb4\" class=\"ll lm ny ln b lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi fk bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Bosco Tan, co-founder of popular budgeting app, Pocketbook, agrees. \u201cThere are the user pain-point and product experience story, and there\u2019s also the company trajectory story. The key is to succinctly thread these together and present this in a way which intrigues a venture capitalist. They are attracted to companies first with their hearts, then with their minds. If the presentation is sounding like a mundane university lecture, then you\u2019ve missed the first opportunity to engage.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"d6f9\" class=\"mj mk fr bf ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng bk\">What Should A Pitch Deck Look Like?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"5fe1\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ll lm fr ln b lo oa lq lr ls ob lu lv lw oc ly lz ma od mc md me oe mg mh mi fk bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It\u2019s generally accepted that a pitch deck be no longer than 10\u201315 slides. Some say 7\u201310 pages or less. Design-wise: short, snappy, sexy and glossy are all great starting points.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5254\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ll lm fr ln b lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi fk bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You\u2019ll want to introduce yourself, the problem and your solution. Why now? How is your tech different and who is your competition? How will you monetise the app? Explain your financial modeland detail the 12-month forecast.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fd06\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ll lm fr ln b lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi fk bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And second only to the financials: be sure to highlight your team\/advisory board. Even the best ideas can fail without great people! That\u2019s why investors back people, not ideas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3122\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ll lm fr ln b lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi fk bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A 2015 joint Harvard Business School study of more than 200 successful pitch decks revealed that investors spend an average of just 3 minutes and 44 seconds reading a deck. The optics of a deal have to withstand intense investor scrutiny.
